Hotel Classification: Kenya has a government-controlled grading system for both hotels and lodges using the normal star system from 1 up to 5. In 2001 Kenya revised the criteria for classification of hotels. In 2002 a countrywide reclassification exercise was begun and is expected to take a few years to complete. Hotels that do not reach 1-star standard but have good facilities are classified as "Recommended" class. However, no hotels currently published in the Gazetteer had these new gradings when last visited so the old ratings are still used here. Standards generally should not be compared with equivalent graded hotels in Western countries. Inconsistencies between the old official category and actual quality are not uncommon and a long row of stars does not necessarily guarantee high standards. We have endeavoured to give the official grading here but careful reference to our descriptions may prove more useful.
